How To Clean Your PortaCot

By The Watts

The other day i found a post online about cleaning your portacot. After seeing it, i was disgusted and felt like i needed to clean it right away! So today’s task after my partner went to work was to clean the portacot using the method i saw.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED –

  • 1/2 cup washing liquid
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 splash of vinegar

STEP 1: Fill the bathtub with the hottest possible water. Add the washing liquid, baking soda and vinegar to the running water. It should start to bubble up straight away (Brooke thought it was bath time so she walked over to inspect the bathtub). Keep filling up the bath with hot water until it is at least half full.

STEP 2: Place the portacot’s mattress into the bath, followed by the base of the portacot. The mattress WILL float. I also put the portacot’s cover in the water.

STEP 3: After 20 minutes of everything soaking in the bath, i rotated the mattress and the base of the portacot. This bit was tricky especially because it was full of water and heavy.

STEP 4: Keep soaking for another 20 minutes. By now you will be able to see the colour of the water getting dirty. I did have to scrub with a small brush just to get any other stains out.

STEP 5: Take everything out and put outside to air dry. Be careful the floor will get messy! I put the portacot base up to dry quicker. I hung the cover up on the washing line. With the mattress I stood it up while it was still dripping wet, than I laid the mattress down

STEP 6: Take the plug out and clean the bath when done. The leftover water will look disgusting towards the end. I never knew much dirt was built up in Brooke’s portacot.

  1. This has blown me away. I’m terrified to clean mine now, mind you equally terrified about using it again before cleaning it :P. I think once all the snow goes away (We’re in Canada) and we get some nice sunny days I am going to have to tackle this. Thanks for the post.

  2. I remember the first time I ever helped the wife clean out the one we had for the grand son. She was amazed at what came out of the crooks and crannies or it.
